UC Davis MIND Institute study finds association between maternal exposure to agricultural pesticides, autism in offspring<\/a><\/h2>\n

The large, multisite California-based study examined associations between specific classes of pesticides, including organophosphates, pyrethroids and carbamates, applied during the study participants\u2019 pregnancies and later diagnoses of autism and developmental delay in their offspring.
\n\u201cThis study validates the results of earlier research that has reported associations between having a child with autism and prenatal exposure to agricultural chemicals in California,\u201d said lead study author Janie F. Shelton, a UC Davis graduate student who now consults with the United Nations. \u201cWhile we still must investigate whether certain sub-groups are more vulnerable to exposures to these compounds than others, the message is very clear: Women who are pregnant should take special care to avoid contact with agricultural chemicals whenever possible.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n

A study has shown that a long-overlooked form of neuron-to-neuron communication called miniature neurotransmission plays an essential role in the development of synapses, the regions where nerve impulses are transmitted and received. The findings, made in fruit flies, raise the possibility that abnormalities in miniature neurotransmission may contribute to neurodevelopmental diseases. The findings, by researchers at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC), were published today in the online edition of the journal Neuron.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n

The team found that the drug bumetanide, a known NKCC1 inhibitor, blocked this process and prevented the cells from overloading with chloride. By knocking down this \u201csecondary\u201d cellular effect of ammonia, the researchers were able to control the seizures in the mice and prolong their survival.<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n
